Contentstack gives us a solid base that’s easily extensible. We’re now able to turn out new features quickly and implement them in an elegant way.

“The APIs and SDKs [software development kits] provided make it really elegant to customize and build on top of Contentstack,” McGiveron said. “We use the Management API to automate the creation and configuration of stacks and then the Extensions SDK makes it really easy to build new UI components into your content types.”
Automatic configuration of new stacks helps the team quickly turn around feature requests. Branched stacks are spun up for local development and testing, then are automatically deleted when the new feature code is merged into production.
Contentstack’s developer tooling also makes it easy to roll back changes as needed. For example, upon launch of the first redesigned website the team saw that their new gated workflow process put too big of a limit on publishing speed.
“When we decided that we didn’t want to use the workflow anymore we just had to make a configuration change in our code,” McGiveron said. “We pushed the code, the pipeline ran, and all five of the stacks for our main sites were updated instantly.”

After years of using VYRE Unify web CMS and dotCMS, Icelandair realized that they needed to adopt a modern CMS and its capabilities to answer the increasing demand for personalization and omnichannel content delivery. After evaluating 15 CMSes, Icelandair chose Contentstack headless CMS as the preferred vendor.

In 2015, Icelandair launched Digital Labs, a new business development unit. The department’s goal was to introduce a digital mindset and culture to Icelandair. A major initiative was to design, develop and launch a new website for the airline.Having initially adopted VYRE Unify as its web management platform and then migrating to dotCMS, it became clear that the open source platforms were unable to meet Icelandair’s needs. DotCMS created more problems than it resolved. For starters, it was unfit to support Icelandair’s modular approach to content design, its batch publishing often took 30-40 minutes to complete, and the lack of webhooks made it difficult to connect with different applications. Additionally, dotCMS cotinually applied hotfixes, which inevitably caused system-wide malfunctions when even the smallest site updates had to be made.

Icelandair chose Contentstack's headless CMS over 15 other platforms to replace dotCMS because of its enterprise-level features, including white-glove customizations, implementation workflows and powerful APIs and integrations.From planning to implementation, it took Icelandair just three weeks to migrate from their previous vendor. Since moving to Contentstack, Icelandair has successfully simplified integrations between the airline and its translation platform. As a result, Icelandair’s content managers are able to manage translations for 12 languages and 16 locales without ever leaving the CMS. They can send entries for translation directly in the CMS by simply publishing them to a separate environment and selecting the desired languages. Dawn Foods chose Contentstack for its MACH (microservices, API-first, cloud-native and headless) digital infrastructure and its ease of use. Content managers at Dawn Foods use it daily for updating and publishing content, without assistance from the development team. Before 2019, Dawn Foods handled all their orders in person and by telephone. They wanted to add an online option to give their retail bakery customers access to their extensive product catalog, the ability to order withone click and a convenient online payment portal. Elastic was tasked with overhauling their WordPress CMS and merging their .com and .org domains. Since then, MongoDB has expanded into a unified developer data platform that integrates its highly secure, globally distributed operational database with services that empower developers to build modern and generative AI-powered applications that unleash the power of software and data.&nbsp;
MongoDB maintains five core websites: MongoDB.com and their developer relations, community, education, and documentation sites. As part of a broader modernization project upgrading the entire mongodb.com tech stack, the business was looking to onboard a unified CMS to replace multiple existing CMSes, some of which were homegrown and none suited the business’s future focus on agility and transformation.&nbsp;
“Our old systems were difficult to manage, to say the least,” Bill Mitchell, Senior Director of Web Strategy and Technology, MongoDB, said.

Our team was excited to find a solution that better supported the business's needs today and into the future.

Some of the top priorities for MongoDB were modernization and localization. The business was looking for a single platform to build upon and experiment with and easily publish content across multiple regions.&nbsp;After a lot of work identifying requirements, creating scorecards, and evaluating competitors, MongoDB chose Contentstack’s Composable DXP. “We quickly realized that the composable model was the future of CMS applications, and it became clear we needed something tried and true,” Mitchell said. “We were open to doing what was the best for our business, and as many of our internal systems were built in a composable way, I knew our teams would be most comfortable with a composable CMS. Comfort means quicker adoption, and we’ve validated that by seeing how other teams have chosen to adopt Contentstack. If we’d gone with a traditional CMS, our team might have absorbed the learning curve, but other teams probably wouldn’t have made that effort.”Design freedom was also a big differentiator for MongoDB. “As a company, everything boils down to delivering our customers the resources they need to innovate with MongoDB faster.&nbsp; That’s why we’re so passionate about our unique designs that bring insightful and engaging experiences to our customers,” Subi Babu, Engineering Lead, MongoDB, said. “There’s a lot of effort put into the user experience, and when it comes to customization, a traditional CMS is a much harder journey. Knowing we had unique designs and UX available made composable the right choice.”

As MongoDB scaled its business to support a growing number of customers worldwide, it determined that its current tech stack and CMSes would not take it where it needed to go. Ultimately, it wanted to replace its technology with a more modern and flexible solution. With Contentstack, that migration can be phased, allowing teams to migrate thousands of pages and develop new content on their timeline.&nbsp;

The main MongoDB website had more than 250 pages migrated to Contentstack, with the first page in production within three months of onboarding. Due to its less complex content structure, the company’s developer relations website achieved a complete migration within eight weeks. Content teams are now beginning to confidently publish content directly from Contentstack. Looking ahead, the team plans for events, solutions, and product pages to follow suit.&nbsp;MongoDB realized immediate value from Contentstack’s Composable DXP and its turnkey integrations. “Coming from an in-house CMS, our background for several years was focused on developing CMS features,” Babu said. “Now, we can use the Marketplace and get plug-and-play integrations, which is exciting. We’re already using Smartling [for language translation and localization], experimenting with BrandFolder [for digital asset management], and down the line, we’re looking to leverage the Optimizely connector [for digital experimentation.]”MongoDB can build innovative and differentiated web experiences faster without thinking about building in-house or related maintenance. “We’re starting to have conversations about integrations and capabilities, all the things that will allow us to achieve more sophistication when delivering value to internal stakeholders and external users,” Mitchell said. “Our conversations are less about break/fix and maintenance and more about feature strategy and use cases that are far more impactful for our audiences.”MongoDB can see the impact of Contentstack on development metrics, from front-end rendering and publishing speeds to ease of content tagging and localization. “We can now localize and translate pages without the cumbersome and complex processes we had in the past,” Mitchell said. “Delays in translation are now down to human reviewers rather than the publishing or content extraction processes that used to slow us down. These are important changes for us because the quicker we can get content to market, whether getting new content on a web page or new experiments out in front of customers — the quicker we can see the business value.”<h3>Leveraging Contentstack Automate for unprecedented time-to-market </h3>In their migration process, MongoDB leveraged Contentstack Automate via Contentstack’s AI Accelerator program to streamline workflows and enhance efficiency. One example of leveraging Automate was to optimize page speed and page publishing. Previously, MongoDB manually managed page speed optimization, turning off third-party scripts on pages that did not require them, a task that included an editor turning configurations on and off and republishing pages. By using Contentstack Automate, MongoDB is able to run this process automatically, thereby improving page speed, reducing manual effort, and realizing immediate SEO benefits due to decreased page load times.

From the evaluation and selection process to onboarding and production, we feel good about our decisions. There are currently four teams using Contentstack, and this adoption speaks volumes about the path that we’re on. MongoDB drives digital modernization with Contentstack

Mattel was looking to move from a monolithic technology stack to a microservice-based architecture where they could benefit from reusable content, and make quick changes to back-end content without impacting the front-end experience. By adopting Contentstack’s headless CMS, engaging digital experiences can now be spun up in weeks rather than months, and conversion rates have increased 4.9x on web and 9.5x on mobile. Contentstack now powers popular experiences on digital including the AmericanGirl doll configurator, and the UNO/NFL collectors card digital catalog.

Mattel had a number of goals in mind when they began considering a solution to transform their content operations&nbsp; – they aimed to&nbsp;build innovative and intuitive digital experiences that drive more traffic to their websites, foster deeper engagement with their many brands and significantly improve the efficiency of their sites globally.&nbsp;However, Mattel was challenged by a rigid technology stack where back-end content and front-end experience were tied together, requiring significant resources to make even the most minor changes to these experiences. Additionally, content needed to be built from scratch every time a new idea was conceived, which meant a slow release cycle.&nbsp;Mattel recognized that they needed to move to a microservice-based architecture, which would support a smoother customer experience at the front end, as well as making content management simpler behind the scenes.&nbsp;

After a thorough discovery process, Contentstack’s headless CMS was chosen to support all of Mattel’s website content. This included e-commerce websites americangirl.com, shop.mattel.com,&nbsp; Mattel creations and the experiences within these sites, as well as websites entirely outside of e-commerce, from play.mattel.com which provides kid-friendly games and experiences, to Mattel’s corporate website for communications.&nbsp;“With Contentstack, everything is microservice driven,” Mark Hall, Senior Director, Digital Technology, Mattel, said. “That means if we want to use React or Vue, we can change that framework without changing the content at the back end. This is really powerful for digital experiences like our American Girl doll configurator, which we rebuilt from scratch, offering customers the ability to build custom dolls on both web and mobile. As we get new molds or styles, we can manage that without any front-end changes whatsoever, which wasn’t possible before.”The American Girl configurator allows users to get granular about their perfect doll, complete with freckles or glasses, a specific hairstyle, or apparel and accessories. Managed wholly through the CMS, all of these elements are image-based and require asset layering in an intelligent way so that users can watch their creation come to life. Using a smart Cloudinary integration, Mattel is able to map assets to the right publishing location within Contentstack. “This integration really helps with optimizing images within the web experience,” Hall said. “We can ensure we have a highly performant website based on what the user’s browser bandwidth is, so that we can return the right assets at the right time. The configurator has become our most successful product on AmericanGirl.com.” Adopting headless technology also means that content is reusable for additional use cases, making it much faster to spin up new digital experiences. Mattel has a series of collectible Hot Wheels NFTs, where customers can see which NFTs they already own and what is available to them in a smart digital catalog. By employing reusable content blocks, Mattel was able to replicate this experience to quickly launch a <a href="https://www.licenseglobal.com/toys-games/uno-partners-with-nfl-for-collectible-card-game">brand-new UNO experience in partnership with the NFL</a>, offering collectible NFL league UNO cards with a digital element where customers can view their cards in an online catalog. “This kind of experience keeps users coming back to the digital store time and time again, and because we had built something similar already we were able to spin it up in just four weeks, when previously it may have taken up to six months,” Hall said.

From an external customer experience the website has got a lot faster and cleaner, but our requirements were not just what the end user looks at, but what production teams needed to have to manage the content. We were looking for a system where it was simple to enter new assets, and also for content authors to customize and manage the content. We said it needed to be easy to use, and it needed to work every time — and Contentstack fit the bill!

Mattel boosts engagement and conversions with reimagined customer experience

Purina, a Land O’Lakes brand focused on animal nutrition, was challenged by targeting varied buyers with the right messaging to encourage conversions. By adopting a real-time Customer Data Platform (CDP) through Lytics, a Contentstack company, they have been able to harvest behavioral information to turn anonymous website visitors into specific audiences. Web personalization campaigns have increased conversions to an average of 30% and improved Purina’s ability to keep visitors on the website for longer.

Land O’Lakes is a leader in the agricultural industry, and Land O’Lakes Dairy Food’s products have been a staple on U.S. breakfast tables for more than a century. The farmer-owned cooperative houses multiple leading brand names under the Land O’Lakes label, including Purina animal nutrition.&nbsp;Purina caters to a wide variety of domesticated species, including chickens, horses, cattle, goats and sheep, and was challenged by creating a web experience that could address disparate audiences, and cater to each buyers’ unique wants and needs. The content that appeals to a horse owner, for example, would not be relevant or interesting to a dairy farmer.&nbsp;To boost conversions and free trials, Purina wanted to create a web experience that was personally tailored to each site visitor. Their goals were to improve personalization and use of behavioral data, with the overall aim of boosting customer engagement and conversions.&nbsp;

Land O’Lakes began research for a web personalization solution, and after an extensive RFP process, found that <a href="https://www.contentstack.com/lytics">Lytics</a>, a Contentstack company, stood out from the pack. Lytics real-time Customer Data Platform (CDP) does more than simply collect data—it gives marketers tools to put that data to work through personalization. Lytics also beat the competition in terms of customer service—by taking the time to understand Land O’Lakes unique goals, Lytics offered a solution that met their specific needs.&nbsp;The Purina team started with a test project to make sure Lytics was a good fit. By targeting horse owners with a personalized web offer, they would attempt to increase free trial adoption for this segment.&nbsp;Using Lytics, Purina scanned all the assets on their website, identified horse-related content, and built out an affinity audience of web visitors who demonstrated an interest in that content. With this process, Purina was able to transform anonymous site visitors into a specific cohort using its existing and untapped behavioral data.&nbsp;Next, Purina created a series of web banners on site pages which included the word “horse” in the URL. These banners were targeted to newsletter subscribers within the horse affinity cohort, screening to exclude those who had already signed up to a trial of horse feed in the past. The custom experience was triggered at the first visit, displayed the content for up to 5 pages, and disabled when a visitor closed or clicked the CTA.Within two weeks, Purina saw a 29% average click rate on the custom banners, and within that group 38% signed up for the free trial, more than a third of users.&nbsp;With the success of the trial, Purina has since adopted Lytics to personalize across their website. Using <a href="https://docs.lytics.com/docs/ml-modeling">Lytics Lookalike Audiences</a>, they have easily replicated similar affinity audiences for every type of animal owner they serve, and now target buyers according to specific business goals, with endless possibilities available. One group has been targeted for a newsletter sign-up initiative for example, while another has been given a specific content offer. The average conversion rate across all offers is 30%.&nbsp;As well as driving customer acquisition and personalization, Purina is using Lytics to track exit intent and keep visitors on the site for longer. When a customer moves their mouse to the top of the page to leave the website, Purina now offers them a piece of content that is relevant to their demonstrated content affinities, re-engaging them on the website and increasing the likelihood of a conversion.

Emma® – The Sleep Company embraces an omnichannel strategy. This includes direct-to-consumer sales via its websites, third-party online stores, marketplace and over 3,500 brick-and-mortar locations. In addition, Emma successfully collaborates with over 200 retailers.At the start of their composable journey, Emma was in hypergrowth mode. Andreas Westerndorpf, CTO of Emma explains: ‘As a start-up, we began in constant ‘survival mode’. Our IT systems were focused on getting the business running and growing. We made decisions that made sense in that phase. We built our system incrementally, improving what needed to be improved and adding all the things that our growth demanded. In this phase, concerns over longer-term strategy take a back seat to solving the challenges of the day.“However, as we became successful, those decisions that made sense early on led to legacy, technical and organizational debt. Business was thriving, but software development was reactive, drowning in tickets and becoming a bottleneck. Emma has experienced hypergrowth since its infancy, so as the business grew almost exponentially, the organization scaled with it — fortunately linearly. However, what didn’t scale was the technology.”

(Hyper)growing pains

A prime example of this lack of scale was the extensively customized e-commerce stack. This legacy system was both time-intensive and costly as it required senior, expert engineers to make changes, upgrades or develop new features. Emma could not isolate changes by country, which created substantial, unnecessary rectification work. Elsewhere, the legacy architecture strained under increasing demands. This included the CMS, e-commerce engine and order management systems.“Anticipating Emma’s highly ambitious business goals, it became apparent that its current technical landscape would not suffice, and simple, incremental improvement would not be enough to transform,” Westerndorpf said. “We needed a radical step ahead.”Emma embraced a composable architecture as it addressed the need for flexibility and modular capabilities. MACH (Microservices, API-first, Cloud-Native, and Headless) technologies offered back-end efficiency and the reuse of content with front-end flexibility to execute varying marketing campaigns, territories and languages at scale.This best-of-breed approach enabled Emma to create a long-term technology investment strategy. This immediately reduced the extensive list of content management systems (CMSes) under consideration. Three candidates that were evaluated in a three-month proof-of-concept implementation.

Overcoming legacy issues

Emma chose Contentstack based on the flexibility of its content structure options. Contentstack’s version control and language isolation features were key aspects of their selection. These allow independent versioning of localized content, so stores remain discrete and in control of content scheduling and batching.The integration between Contentstack and other elements in the Emma stack accelerated implementation. The enterprise scale of the Contentstack CMS matched Emma’s plans and roadmap for growth.Contentstack’s headless structure enables Emma to reuse content across channels. Different countries develop their own, locally flavored experiences, supported by centralized technology and content creation teams. This approach has allowed new stores to be established more quickly as existing content and structures can be copied and altered without changing the underlying technology. Consequently, the use of Contentstack throughout Emma has recently skyrocketed to more than 100 users. This activity is currently focused on “store-building" by developing the latest content to create new stores before the critical Black Friday period.The team has enjoyed faster publishing processes and a marked improvement in the collaboration between the technology and business teams.

Emma launches omnichannel campaigns 8x faster with Contentstack

Sky, the European media and entertainment company, needed to be able to quickly respond to editorial needs without an over-reliance on IT. By leveraging Contentstack’s modular blocks, content types, and a custom stack management tool, Sky created Sky Websites. This easy-to-use website builder platform allows non-technical editors to quickly build branded websites that are secure, compliant, accessible, and resilient. Sky has increased speed to market with new websites, provided unprecedented creative freedom to its content editors, and freed up developer resources to focus on customer experience innovation.

Sky set out to refresh and rebrand its entire corporate website — 50-60 pages of content. At that point, the layout of each individual page was hard coded by a software development team. Editors were limited with what they could change and relied on developers building the same elements over and over again for each update.After running the numbers for the website rebrand, the team realized that at two or three days per page, the cost would be significant. Waltz Health is leading a new way forward for prescription care by partnering with an ever-growing network of health plans, pharma companies, healthcare providers, patient benefit programs and managers, and pharmacies to create unique marketplaces that give patients visibility into available programs to save money on life-saving medications.&nbsp;Waltz Health selected Contentstack to create and deliver unique client portals that provide patients with an intuitive search experience that presents comparable prices for their medications and relevant prescription information, leveraging data from across their entire partner network.

Complexity is a way of life within the pharmaceutical industry with varying plan structures, provider partnerships, offers, treatment solutions, and pricing schemes. Waltz Health aims to simplify end-user and pharmacist experiences by tapping into massive streams of partner and benefits data to surface available savings programs for patients.In addition to providing patients better pricing and important information about their prescriptions, Waltz needed to offer its partners–including health plans, employers, and major pharmaceutical retailers–white-labeled experiences as customers arrived on product pages. The new experiences would balance giving customers the best possible shopping journey, while supporting their partners’ brand marketing objectives.To achieve the new marketplace, Waltz needed to enable both technical and non-technical users alike to create templates where product data, pricing, and branded assets can easily be incorporated into new web pages. The company also needed to leverage APIs to tap into the most current patient plan and benefits information to boost experience relevance for each user. Automated up-to-date data access was particularly important as Waltz has an aggressive growth plan to scale quickly while it already supports health plans and national retail pharmacies.

With the strategy in place, the Waltz Health engineering team was primed to execute.&nbsp;Following a thorough market evaluation, the company’s engineers knew that they wanted to leverage Contentstack as its preferred solution.
